Our meeting site, Rosliston Forestry Centre, is located south of Burton-upon-Trent and north-east of Lichfield. Meetings are held in the Forest Classroom next to the Hub Café on the site. They are held monthly, throughout the year, and are in a magazine-style format (see below). Occasionally, a meeting may also include a guest speaker from outside of the group. In July and August, the meetings are held in a "workshop" format and in December, there is a Christmas quiz.
Occasionally, meetings may be held in a different week in a month due to certain circumstances, so please do regularly check the calendar to confirm dates and times. A full schedule of upcoming meetings and events can be found here.
Meetings start at 19:30 and finish at around 22:30 and include an "Around The Sky" presentation. They also include a talk on a particular topic to do with astronomy led by a member of the group. Public observing is held after the meetings if the sky is clear. You don't need to own a telescope, but please do bring any of your equipment with you if you have any, and would like to. Red light torches and lights (such as rear lights for bikes) are encouraged for navigating around the site when it's dark, but please don't use white torches. Also, please do dress up warm.
There is a charge of £3 entrance fee per adult (£1.50 per young person under the age of 16) for RAG members per meeting to help cover expenses. Non-members can attend for up to three meetings before requiring to join as a member; the entrance fee will remain the same. The fee includes a refreshment during the break. The Forestry Centre also has a small charge for parking, which can be paid for at a parking machine. You don't need to book for meetings - just turn up and join us! Please note that we reserve the right to decline admission to meetings if the classroom is full.
There are two barriers which allow access to/exit from the Forestry Centre and both are required to be kept down in the evening. The ENTRANCE barrier will be raised between the hours of 19:00 and 19:30 to allow access to the site for cars, and is located 200m further down the road from the exit barrier. The barrier will only be raised outside of these times in exceptional circumstances - in such a case, please call 07802 350187 or 07977 269738 on arrival.
When exiting from the site after meetings, cars can drive up to the exit barrier where it will raise automatically.
